1/3 The Argentine laboratory shares similarities with the advanced laboratory of neoliberalism in Chile under the Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990). As J. Piñera—a Harvard “Chicago Boy”—admitted, “they penetrated areas traditionally outside the bounds of economic rationality, such as labor relations, social security, education, health, municipal management, and even defense.” The “Chicago Boys” thus championed the neoliberal model for the first time. In the language of economist Friedrich von Hayek, they led a “constructivist” revolution through technocratic despotism.
